Map Feature Descriptions

Hint: At any time to display detailed descriptions of the different map layers, click on the legend entry's text name in the legend frame for more information.

Current Images – This is the aerial photography for the municipality. The images were taken in 2002.

County Boundary – This is the official municipal boundary.

Hydro Features – This feature consists of all natural and manmade water features greater than 400 meters in length. This data was acquired from the AltaLIS 1:20,000 data set.

Township Grid – This feature breaks the municipality into smaller sections known as townships. These townships are six miles by six miles.

Roads – This feature represents the major roads.

Road Labels – These are simply labels representing the names of major roads in the municipality.

Map Labels – These are labels of the major attractions and locations within the municipality, such as hamlets, parks, etc.

Towns – These are text labels identifying the major towns and hamlets within the municipality.

Parks – These features are the provincial and national parks. These were obtained from the 1:20,000 data set from AltaLIS.

Grazing Reserves– These are a representation of the boundaries of registered grazing reserves.

Indian Reserves - This feature represents the boundaries of registered Indian reserves and settlements.

Cadastre – This is the parcel map of the municipality and includes all titled and leased properties. This includes basic property information such as legal description, parcel area, owners, zoning, and the tax roll number. Owner Data as of 2/22/2012 1:03:59 AM. Industrial Accounts - These are the accounts created by the municipality for the assessment of oil and gas activities. These are updated once a year.

Rural Addresses– These are the addresses assigned in the municipality. These addresses are based on a 100 meter grid interval in conjunction with the Township/Range road system.

Map Points – Map points represent a number of different features on the map such as residences, churches, towers, community halls, etc. By clicking the Map Point Manager you can view and modify which map points should show up in the map. This data is collected from the municipality's assessment system. This data is updated once a year (March).

Owner Labels – These are text labels of the primary owner of the property. The owners are derived from the owner of record in the municipality's tax system. These are for display purposes only, for the most current owner information, please check the owners listed in the cadastre. Data as of Nov 24, 2011.

Section Grid – This feature represents the section lines from the AltaLIS 1:20,000 data set.

Section Label – These are labels of each section of the Alberta Township Survey.

Rural Legal Label – This is the label showing the long legal description, also known as the rural legal (Example: NW-12-56-22-5).

Active Wells – These are the surface locations of all of the wells within the municipality that are not classified as abandoned. The locations and data are from Alberta Energy and Utilities Board records. Data as of January 2012.

Abandoned Wells – These are the surface locations of all of the wells within the municipality that are classified as abandoned. The locations and data are from Alberta Energy and Utilities Board records. Data as of January 2012.

Pipeline – These are a graphic representation of all of the pipelines that are listed with Alberta Energy and Utilities Board. Data as of January 2012.

Active Pipeline by H2S – This is the active pipeline displayed with different colors for differing ranges of H2S content. Data as of January 2012.

Facilities – These are oil and gas related facilities such as gas plants, compressors, meter stations, and batteries. Data as of January 2012.

Speed Limits – These are the posted or implied speed limits on all roads in the municipality.

Signs/Posts – These are the roadside assets such as signs. By clicking on these items you can view the type of support structure (post) and the types and pictures of related signs.

Gravelling Program – This feature displays the municipality's gravelling program with a thematic on the year that it was completed. There is the ability to turn on and off each year's gravelling by clicking on the thematic button to the right of the title.

Surface Type – This feature contains the surface type of all roads in the municipality.

Road Subsurface – This feature contains the subsurface information for the roads in the municipality.

2008 Dust Control – This is the 2008 dust control program in the municipality.

2009 Dust Control – This is the 2009 dust control program in the municipality.

2008 Gravelling Program – This is the 2008 gravelling program in the municipality.

2009 Gravelling Program – This is the 2009 gravelling program in the municipality.

2008 Spray Data – This is the 2008 spraying program in the municipality.

Mowing Program – This contains the municipality's mowing program.

Guardrails – These are lines indicating the location of guardrails within the municipality.

Bridges – These are lines indicating the location of bridges within the municipality.

Culverts – These are points indicating the location of culverts within the municipality.

Accidents – This feature is used to track accidents and the data associated with them.

Road Width – This feature is used to track the width of each road.

Road Use – This feature allows the municipality to track road use applications. Road use applications would include rig moves, log hauls, and equipment moves.

Road Work – The feature allows the municipality to track and display its road work and construction projects.

Road Details – The feature allows the municipality to track data for each road segment that is necessary for Tangible Capital Asset compliance.

Fire Hydrants – These are points indicating the location of fire hydrants within the municipality.

Water Valves – These are points indicating the location of the water valves within the municipality.

Manhole Covers – These are points indicating the location of manhole covers within the municipality.

Address Signs – These are points indicating the location of address signs within the municipality.

Light Posts – These are points indicating the location of light posts within the municipality.

Street Lights – These are points indicating the location of street lights within the municipality.

Sidewalks – These are lines indicating the location of sidewalks within the municipality.

Curb/Gutter – These are lines indicating the location of curbs and gutters within the municipality.

Bus Routes – This feature contains the bus routes within the municipality.

Grader Beats – The defined areas for grader operators.

Maintenance Areas – The defined areas for road maintenance.

Zoning –These are the boundaries indicating the land use in different areas of the County.

Soil Classification – This feature represents the rating for soil regions from the Canadian Land Inventory (CLI). For a detailed description of the data set please refer to here.

Environmentally Sensitive Areas- This feature represents the location of Environmentally Significant Areas (ESAs) which are defined by their important and/or unique environmental values which are vital to the longterm maintenance of biodiversity and ecological processes and services within a region. Criteria for the areas are: Criteria 1 = Areas that contain elements of conservation concern, Criteria 2 = Areas that contain rare or unique landforms, Criteria 3 = Areas that contain habitat for local species, Criteria 4 = Areas that contain important wildlife habitat, Criteria 5a = Contains headwater streams, Criteria 5b = Contains intact riparian areas, Criteria 5c = Contains riparian areas along the six major rivers, Criteria 6 = Contains large natural areas, Criteria 7 = Contains sites of recognized significance. Significant Historical Sites - These are the locations within the municipality deemed historical resources by the Alberta Government. This data is updated twice a year in late February and late August, taking effect March 1st and September 1st.Source

Proposed Subdivisions –These are the locations of the proposed approved subdivisions. These features are maintained by the County in GeoMedia.

Water Source – These are water sources identified by emergency response to use in emergency situations.

Water Lines – This feature represents the location of water supply lines (with related valves and reducers) within the municipality. This data set may not contain all of the water lines; it contains only the water lines that were available from the data provided. The water lines were digitized from paper plans, georeferenced CAD data, and non-georeferenced CAD data.

Sanitary Sewer Lines – This feature represents the location of sanitary sewer lines (with related valves) within the municipality. This data set may not contain all of the sanitary sewer lines; it contains only the sanitary sewer lines that were available from the data provided. The sanitary sewer lines were digitized from paper plans, georeferenced CAD data, and non-georeferenced CAD data.

Stormwater Sewer Lines – This feature represents the location of stormwater sewer lines within the municipality. This data set may not contain all of the stormwater sewer lines; it contains only the stormwater sewer lines that were available from the data provided. The stormwater sewer lines were digitized from paper plans, georeferenced CAD data, and non-georeferenced CAD data.

Manholes – This feature represents the location of manholes for both sanitary sewer and stormwater sewer lines within the municipality. This data set may not contain all of the manholes; it contains only the manholes that were available from the data provided. The manholes were digitized from paper plans, georeferenced CAD data, and non-georeferenced CAD data.

Catch Basins – This feature represents the location of catch basins for stormwater sewer lines within the municipality. This data set may not contain all of the catch basins; it contains only the catch basins that were available from the data provided. The catch basins were digitized from paper plans, georeferenced CAD data, and non-georeferenced CAD data.

Lift Station – This feature represents the location of lift stations (for pumping sewage up hill) within the municipality. This data set may not contain all of the lift stations; it contains only the lift stations that were available from the data provided. The lift stations were digitized from paper plans, georeferenced CAD data, and non-georeferenced CAD data.

Water Well – This feature represents the location of water wells within the municipality. This data set may not contain all of the water wells; it contains only the water wells that were available from the data provided. The water wells were digitized from paper plans, georeferenced CAD data, and non-georeferenced CAD data.

Reservoir – This feature represents the location of water supply reservoirs within the municipality. This data set may not contain all of the water reservoirs; it contains only the water reservoirs that were available from the data provided. The water reservoirs were digitized from paper plans, georeferenced CAD data, and non-georeferenced CAD data.

Electoral Districts – These are the defined electoral districts for the municipality. The elected official's name, address, and phone number are recorded in this feature.

Ambulance Districts – Ambulance response districts.

Fire Districts – Fire response districts.

Cemetery Plots – This is the defined boundaries for the cemetery plots.

Cemetery Caskets – These are the locations of the cemetery caskets.

Cemetery Labels – These are the labels to describe the cemetery sites and caskets. These will include the plot dimensions and the casket occupant.

Lot/Block/Plan Labels – These are the labels of the legal descriptors of registered plans. Data as of Jan 17, 2012.

Plan Boundaries – These are the labels of the legal descriptors of registered plans. Data as of Jan 17, 2012.

Block Boundaries – These are the boundaries of the blocks defined within registered plans. Data as of Jan 17, 2012.

Lot Lines – These are the legally subdivided lot line boundaries. Data as of Jan 17, 2012.

Title Lines – These are lines that represent the titled boundaries of a parcel, where it is not fully defined by a legal subdivision. Data as of Jan 17, 2012.

Right of Ways – These are the registered right of way plans. Data as of Jan 17, 2012.

Dimensions – These are the official dimensions of various features such as lots and road right of ways. Data as of Jan 17, 2012.

Aims Viewer – The AIMS viewer is a tool that allows the user to view weed infestations within the County that were collected with the AIMS Inspector tool. The viewer allows the user to select specific weeds or weed groups to map. You can also map inspections completed by the weed inspectors based on the month that they occurred.

2007 Weed Infestations – This feature represents the MD's Weed Infestations collected by the AIMS program for 2007.

2006 Weed Infestations – This feature represents the MD's Weed Infestations collected by the AIMS program for 2006.

Assessment Compare – This is a manager item that can display different changes in the municipality's assessment base from year to year. It can display the assessment change on a property, identify new accounts, identify new buildings, display the assessor's inspection locations, or display the sales the assessor used in his/her analysis process. Click on the M beside the legend entry to open the manager. Once open, simply expand the items that you would like to see and then check the boxes beside them. Once you have all of the items selected that you would like to see, click the Apply Changes button. All of the styles assigned to the features in this group can be modified by the user.

Farmland – This is a graphic representation of the assessment farmland records which reflect the productivity of the land. Variables such as topography, soil type, tree cover, stone cover and alkalinity are all taken into account. This is derived from the municipal assessment records that are updated annually.

Improvement Points – This feature represents every building that is assessed within the municipality. These are derived from the municipal assessment records that are updated annually.

Market Land Points – This feature represents every market land record within the municipal assessment system.

Location Codes – These are the divisions that the assessor has determined to help break the municipality into market locations.

Census Blocks – This is used by the federal government for the collection and analysis of census data.

Dissemination Areas- This is used by the federal government for the collection and analysis of census data.

Troubleshooting Webmap Problems

To view maps on this site you require the Free Adobe SVG viewer to be installed. If you see maps on the site then you already have the viewer installed. If you do not see the maps or are receiving errors, click here to download the viewer. Or if you haven't gone beyond the Welcome page, enter your assigned login information and you will be prompted and redirected to Adobe's site to download the required viewer (Recommended). Follow the onscreen instructions to download the viewer, you must have Administrator privileges for your computer in order to install the plug-in, contact your IT staff if you do not have such privileges.

General Problems

Q: When I access the site I receive an error "You need internet explorer to browse this site".
A: You will need Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher to access the site. Internet Explorer 6.0 is recommended. If you would prefer to use Modzilla/Firefox, we recommend you download the IE Tab plug-in to so you can show Internet explorer in a Firefox tab. Please visit the Mozdev.org website for more information.

Q: When I enter the WebMap site and the map is displayed I receive Microsoft JScript runtime error messages similar to "Object expected Line: XX, Column XX" or "Object doesn't support this property or method".
A: You will need to upgrade your Adobe SVG Viewer plug-in to the latest version. Click here to download the new viewer, follow the onscreen instructions to download the viewer and once installed you should be able to see the map window. You must have Administrator privileges for your computer in order to install the plug-in, contact your IT staff if you do not have such privileges.

Q: When I enter the WebMap site, the Working graphic is shown with a progress bar and then disappears and no map is shown. I see the panning arrows and the scale bars/value below and that is all.
A: This usually happens when you access the website using a webserver path/URL that is different than what is expected. Please contact your GIS Coordinator for assistance.

Printing Problems

Q: When I click on the print icon in the Webmap toolbar and I am in the Print Preview Manager window. I set my print options and click on the Print button, the Print Preview Manager window disappears and nothing happens.
A: Popups must be blocked on the site, configure your browser to always allow "popups" for this site by configuring your web browser or 3rd party "toolbar" add-on software.

Q: When I print a map to my color printer the legend entries boxes, Labels, lines in the printout do not show the assigned colors but instead show white, blank or nothing.
A: You will need to configure your Internet Explorer browser to print background colors and images. From internet explorer select the tools menu and select Tools\Internet Options and from the Advanced tab scroll until you find the Printing section of the dialog. Then click on the checkbox to Print Background colors and images and then print your map again.

Q: When I print my map, not all of the map is shown on the page and some of it is chopped off.
A: Depending on the page size and layout you selected from the Print Preview Manager window, it is still necessary to set the same page setup in Internet Explorer. To do this, select File/Page Setup from the Internet Explorer window and set the same paper size and orientation specified in the Preview Manager Window. It is also assumed the default margin sizes of 0.5" are used. You can also select the Print Preview menu item to view the print job before printing to make sure it will show up correctly.
